Spinal Hygiene

SPINAL HYGIENE

What does spinal hygiene include?

Similar to when you go see your dentist and they stress the importance of brushing your teeth and flossing regularly, the same concept is true for the HEALTH OF YOUR SPINE. Daily practices can improve the health of your spine and may prevent future damage.

It is best to prevent serious problems from developing, than to fix them after they appear.

Spinal health is an important part of your overall health and while we have been in lockdown, this is even more imperative to focus on. Decreased exercise, poor posture, bad diet and constant stress (hello pandemic life) all contribute to the decline in spinal health and overall wellness.

Here are 2 things to focus on this month for your spinal hygiene.

Spinal flexibility ~Your range of motion through all the planes of motion, if your spine feels like it is restricted, this is something we are your chiropractor can address.

  • Posture is key here, ensuring your work set up is set up so you are at eye level with your screen.

  • Sitting on a chair that you can we square on with your device

  • Sleeping on your side or back and avoiding lying on your stomach for long periods.

Muscles ~You should be taking care of your muscles around your spine, this includes your core muscles which are around your mid section, these muscles play an important role in the health and motion of your spine.

  • Mindfully moving your spine and muscles in some way each day, this can be through yoga, stretching exercises or muscle building with body/light weights

  • Magnesium to support your muscle recovery and brain/nervous system health
