5 Tips to Help Your Posture and Spine

Nobel Prize recipient Dr. Roger Sperry says that the spine is the motor that drives the brain. According to his research “90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine.” Only 10% of our brain’s energy goes into thinking, metabolism, immunity, and healing. Sperry demonstrated that 90% of brain energy goes into processing and maintaining the body’s relationship with gravity.

  • Sit up straight: pay attention to your posture when you are sitting or driving. Imagine there is a vertical line drawn just above your belly button, and you are trying to lengthen it by sitting up straight.

  • Make a double chin: One of the worst type of health problems is the loss of the natural curves of the spine, and as a chiropractor I see this daily. Spend some time practicing to pull the neck in & create a double chin, this helps the curve of your neck.

  • Change up your carrying bag: Carrying your heavy bag on one arm or shoulder for hours a day may affect the curve of your spine in the attempt to support the weight of the bag. Invest in a backpack (there are some trendy ones around), lighten the load of the bag and change the side you carry it frequently.

  • Exercise: there is no getting around it, you must move your spine and strengthen the muscles around your spine to improve your posture. I recommend practicing doing a plank, either on your knees initially or on your feet. Start off with 30 second intervals and increase it as you get stronger.

  • See your chiropractor: You may be finding it tough to do all of the above because your spine is not moving optimally, or you are feeling restricted in your neck, middle or lower back. A chiropractor’s job is to look after your spine, its motion and your nervous system, we are able to determine where you need more help or further imaging (eg x-rays) is required and assist accordingly.

BONUS: Set yourself triggers in your environment to remind you to do the above. For example every time you see a red car you check your posture. This can be effective if you set the trigger as an item you know can come into your view frequently
